Amber Vaughn is a good girl. She sings solos at church, babysits her nephew after school, and spends every Friday night hanging out at her best friend Devon’s house. It’s only when Amber goes exploring in the woods near her home, singing camp songs with the hikers she meets on the Appalachian Trail, that she feels free—and when the bigger world feels just a little bit more in reach.
When Amber learns about an audition at the North Carolina School of the Arts, she decides that her dream—to sing on bigger stages—could also be her ticket to a new life. Devon’s older (and unavailable) brother, Will, helps Amber prepare for her one chance to try out for the hypercompetitive arts school. But the more time Will and Amber spend together, the more complicated their relationship becomes . . . and Amber starts to wonder if she’s such a good girl, after all.
Then, in an afternoon, the bottom drops out of her family’s world—and Amber is faced with an impossible choice between her promise as an artist and the people she loves. Amber always thought she knew what a good girl would do. But between “right” and “wrong,” there’s a whole world of possibilities.
my thoughts
Good and beautiful book! That's the overall thought, because it was beautifully written and had a good story. This can be the perfect definition of what contemporary means, not that you have doubts, but still. I like it very much, but I didn't exaclty love it.
When you live in a house where everything is wrong... when you live in a town that its rules by lies... when you live according of what everyone things... when you live in a town where there isn't any space to grow in what you want to be ... There is only ONE option, Run. That's what Amber Vaugh does and wants to do. The whole summer she have been other person outside of her house, after the summer is up the plan is to make it perfect in an audition at the NCSA and get the hell out of dodge. BUT things, more like people, get in the middle of that dream. What she will do?
My favorite characters was definitely CA, because she was always cheerful, but something it was annoying. And for the boys, I dunno because I like Will, but I like Devon too. I think that because they are siblings is the why I like them so much, right? The narrator (Amber) wasn't my favorite, but she was good telling the story and I understood everything and nothing confused me.
After finishing, I don't know, I just felt nothing at all. It was a good ending and very lovely, but that's it. It didn't made a spark inside of me or made some space inside my mind. It was just lovely and very down to earth, because this story is how many people live these days. She wanted to fly, and the finally did at the end.
"I'm ready to fly through the door and back again.I'm ready to sing to the wind."
